Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does the school calendar look like?

The school year will run from August through May.

How many students will you accept?

Our space is limited. Our capacity depends on the learning lounge. Once we hit that limit, we will be waitlisting all other families / students.

Is Lumina a religious school?

No. Children and families of all faiths are welcome at Lumina Academy.

Is Lumina a Montessori school?
While we are not a licensed Montessori school, we draw inspiration from and integrate many Montessori principles into our educational approach. This includes maintaining multi-age classrooms, encouraging learners to move freely, and prioritizing experiential and project-based learning with an emphasis on personal development and practical skills acquisition.
Moreover, we are influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach and incorporate 21st-century e-Learning tools, engage learners in real-world projects, and employ the Socratic method of instruction. Our educational philosophy focuses on fostering a holistic learning experience where learners develop not only knowledge but also the skills and attitudes necessary for success.
How is Lumina Academy different?
Lumina academy is a secular, private, project-based learner-driven school. We aim to create a positive, growth mindset environment in order to inspire curious, independent learners who find great joy in creating, learning, and collaborating in a tight knit community while discovering their own personal gifts and talents.
We believe this is the optimal approach to providing a 21st-century education for our students.
Will children be grouped in grades?
Following a Montessori principle, we believe that children learn most effectively when they collaborate with peers of varying ages rather than being grouped solely by age. In addition to personalized curriculum, students of all ages participate in collaborative group work.

Is Lumina Academy a homeschool?
Under the state of Florida, we are designated as a private school. We operate with much of the same flexibility that homeschooling families often follow.
Our founders are big believers in the learner-driven approach many homeschooling / unschooling families work to incorporate.
Physically, we are at a location outside of a home but with the mentality that this is an establishment that extends from the home.
